Our fall 2017 Distinguished Lecturer Series features Associate Professors of Communication Studies Maria Brann and Jennifer Bute (IUPUI).
As many as 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Pregnancy loss is difficult to discuss in both relational and clinical contexts. Couples coping with miscarriage must negotiate how to manage private information and societal pressures about whether and how to communicate their experiences. Women have reported unsatisfying conversations in which healthcare providers use physician-centered language when delivering the news or discussing their miscarriage experience. Using communication theory and research to investigate talk about miscarriage offers practical implications for couples and clinicians.
